“Have A Merry Muppet Monday And A Happy Zoot Year!” – My Zoot Sketchcard

Hey, gang- it’s my first post of the new year, and it’s another Muppet Monday one. This time I’m featuring my last sketchcard of 2023…the Electric Mayhem’s sax player- Zoot.

I started off with a BiC #2(HB) 0.5mm mechanical pencil on one of my own custom sketchcard blanks. I then broke out some of my markers.

I’ve got a few different brands I use these days. For this sketchcard I mostly used Ohuhu, Weisbrandt, and a few Copic markers. I occasi0nally will use Letraset and Prismacolor markers as well.

Started off with my yellows, then some blues and greens. Added a bit of metallic silver and gold to his sax and glasses with uni-ball Signo gel pens.

I then did some line work with a black 03 Pigma Micron pen. Some folks like to do their black linework/inking before coloring, and although Microns are waterproof I find that the markers can smudge the ink so I do my inking after my colors. I used a white Sakura Gelly Roll pen for some of the highlights. I then used a light blue Copic marker over the some of the white highlights in his hair and skin/fleece.

I also used a white Prismacolor pencil for blending/softening some of the highlights. I “skipped a groove” and forgot to draw in Zoot’s thumb behind the sax, so I did a bit of white gel pen, let it dry well, added a bit of blue marker, then inked it and signed the card with my micron pen. Once done I took the sketchcard outside and gave it a light spraying of Krylon workable fixative to protect it.

I’ll have it for sale with several of my other sketchcards at 901 Comics East out on Macon Road in Cordova, TN.

If you’re interested in learning more about sketchcards or the art supplies I use slide by one of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association dinner meet-ups…

…or one of the MSCA events at 901 Comics East, like our Drink-N-Draw nights and Sat-Art-Days. I’ll have some free MSCA sketchcard blanks and extra art supplies for you to use if you’d like.

If you’d like to purchase some markers, pens, and/or sketchcard blanks be sure to check out the Art Center on Union Avenue in Memphis, TN.

Hope you all had a safe New Years Eve, and a Happy New Year!
