“Excelsior..!” – My Stan ‘The Man” Lee Sketchcard

Hey, gang- today I’m featuring a recent Stan Lee sketchcard I did for 901 Comics East.

I got to meet Stan at the Phoenix Comic Con back in 2010, and I was lucky enough to get Stan to sign my first art book, “How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way“. My boss at 901 Comics– Jaime, worked with Stan at other conventions a few years before Stan’s passing.

Jaime orcered a bunch of sketchcard blanks for the store’s upcoming mystery boxes, so I did one for his Stan collection, and to test out the cardstock.

I started off with pencil. I used a click-pencil on this one, but usually any #2/HB lead works fine for me. I then broke out the markers and started working on his fleshtones.

My friend Vicky gave me a ton of alcohol design markers that I keep at the store for our MSCA Sat-Art-Days and Drink-N-Draw events (next Drink-N-Draw is Wednesday, November 15th from 6-8pm). I used a couple differnent greys and teals for the background and his sweater.

I usee one marker with a brush tip to do some detailed shading. Then I used a Pigma Micron pen, and a black Gelly Roll pen for the details.

I used a white Gelly Roll pen and a white Prismacolor pencil for the highlights.

Once the card was finished I sprayed a light coat of Krylon workable fxative on it and gave it to Jaime…’nuff said!

If you’d like to check out more of my sketchcards slide by 901 Comics East in Cordova and/or The Cellar in Bartlett.
