The SIVADS of March are upon us- starting tonight!

Lots of great events happening this weekend paying tribute to Watson Davis, also known as SIVAD- local horror host of “Fantastic Features” here in Memphis back in the late 60′s and early 70′s.

I’ll be a part of a horror art show at Adam Shaw’s studio (2547 Broad Avenue)  this Friday, March 26th from 6-8pm.

Fellow MSCA members Adam Shaw, Greg Cravens, Kevin Williams will be showing their SIVAD and horror tribute art, as well as comic artists Dean Zachary and Jim Hall- and artist/wrestler/former Memphis mayoral candidate Jerry “The King” Lawler.

This weekend while we were up in Cape Girardeau, MO Kevin got the call that his Papa Roy had passed away at his home  down in Potts Camp, MS (just outside of Holly Springs).

I got to meet Papa several times, and had the privilege to attend his 100th and 101st birthday parties. He was a lot of fun to be around, and had a great sense of humor.

This from Kevin-

Papa Roy Velt Rhea – October 8, 1907 – April 25, 2009

The greatest person of my whole entire life has passed away at 101 years 6 months. While it should be expected, it was sudden news. Papa Roy Rhea had his mind and knowledge all the way through the end. He could remember things from his childhood and last week. His humor was always rich and quick, and you could never, ever get a joke over on him (although I did just once)!

This is going to be the worst and hardest days of my life which I have to deal with the next few days, but it is just part of what you have to deal with in life.

Prayers and good thoughts sent my way will be certainly helpful.

I put a bit of a tribute up on www.muleythemule.com last night, and likely more information will go online soon. Check that out for a nice couple words about the last day. While this kills my heart and soul, it is a good way for Papa Roy’s story to end–going to sleep on the front porch of his little house that he loved so much.

Thanks,
Kev
