“People let me tell you ’bout my best friend…”
I’d like to introduce you to Koda- the newest member of the Workman clan.
He is a chow-mix rescue from the Hardeman Adoptable Animals shelter in Bolivar, TN that my sister LaDonna introduced us to. She’s shared a lot of pics of cute chow and husky puppies, but we just weren’t able to take in another pet. Nicki used to travel a lot more, and we had 4 cats at one time. Unfortunately we had Harley Quinn pass away around the pandemic, and Jarael (our oldest cat and first) had to be put to sleep this last year due to a long battle with hyperthyroidism.
With me being unemployed and Nicki working from home more we’re around more to have a dog finally, so the timing was right.
He’s just over 4mos old and a little over 30lbs, and will be a BIG boy! I can tell a difference in his size in the almost 3 weeks he’s been with us. Nicki ordered a DNA test to see what breeds make him up, and to see if there are any health issues we need to keep an eye out for. He’s had his first round of shots, and will get his next one in a week or so. We’ll need to get him checked out by our vet soon, micro-chipped, and in a couple months have him “fixed”.
We’ve been fostering him to see how well he would do around our cats Lex and Lena. He’s super sweet, and so far is fitting in well with the Luthors.
Nicki had to go out of town for a work trip right after we got him so we’ve been able to give it a few weeks. They’re still not thrilled about having another furry creature in their house, but no major drama and they’re getting closer and closer to each other every day.
He loves his toys (especially his new gator), playing in the backyard, and getting belly rubs. He’s super soft- his ears are velvety, and his lower back feels like lamb/sheep wool.
He likes going on walks around the neighborhood- especially the park near our house and the horse farm down the street.
There’s a big field across from it, and a dog park and more walking trails across the highway.
I took him through the old cemeteries by us today. It’s had a lot of the overgrowth cleared out recently and he loved the open spaces. I definitely got some steps in trying to keep up with him.
He’s done really great riding in the car with me, and even went up to the cemetery to change out the flowers on my mom’s grave.
He had an accident in his crate on his ride over here with my sister.
It was storming the day he came to us and he was pretty spooked by the hour and a half to 2 hour trip down.
She gave him a much needed bath, and of course a day or two later he rolled in mud outside and I had to give him another bath!
He’s been great about going outside to use the bathroom. I usually have to go at least once during the middle of the night and am up early so I take him out when I’m up.
It’s been quite a while since Nicki or I had a dog in our lives, and we’ll be officially adopting him this weekend.
We love our new boy, and glad to have him in our family!🐾❤️
EDIT: We just got his DNA test results back and here are the results. We would’ve put money on him being part lab, but nope- Chow, Pit Bull, German Shepherd, and Boxer.
Today we took him to visit our vet for the first time. He got a few shots, some heart worm meds, and some new bling. We scheduled his neuter surgery and microchipping for later this month.
He was such a good boy we took him to Starbucks for another pup-cup.
He loves them, and I was a good boy and got my own cup, too!
