Hey, gang- back again with another Monster Monday art post featuring the one and only SIVAD!
Sivad was the monster of ceremonies horror host on Channel 13/WHBQ’s “Fantastic Features” TV show from 1962 to 1972. He was actually Watson Davis who was a Malco movie theater employee from the age of 13 (started off as an usher) who later did amazing monster movie displays and events as the advertising director. The Malco is where the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Memphis is today. “SIVAD” is “DAVIS” spelled backwards. (Click HERE to find out more about SIVAD.}
For this mini-monsterpiece I started off drawing the image on a smaller tombstone shaped stretched canvas with a #2 pencil. i used a large nib oil based Sharpie marker to color the sides of the canvas.
Next I used a larger black Posca acrylic paint marker to shape up the drawing and filling in the background.
Getting a smooth and even coverage on a canvas can be tricky and take a few coats. I’d let one pass dry and then come back over it again. Once the black was filled in I started adding the red details with an IVSUN acrylic marker.
I used a few different blues on the highlights on his hat and cape. Next was adding different shades of greys with my IVSUN, Posca, and Sharpie Creative markers. I got a new set of GuangNa greyscale acrylic markers and some black Artistro ones off of Amazon that came in just in time for this piece.
I used a variety of pinks, browns, and light blues for his skin tones. I tried to keep the medallion details kinda loose and “implied”.
Once I was done with the coloring I came in with a black Pigma Micron pen to do some smaller details, and a white Gelly Roll pen for some highlights like the eyes.
When I completed the painting I took it outside to spray some Krylon Workable Fixative over the canvas. It’s best to do it in light overlapping layers and in a well ventilated space or outdoors.
