Muppet Monday – Animal Mayhem Sketchcover

Hey, gang- back again for some more Muppet Monday mayhem.

This time I’m sharing my latest sketchcover featuring Animal!

This is my third Mid-South Cartoonists AssociationThe Good, The Bad, and the Sketchy” zine sketchcover. My first was a Cookie Monster wraparound cover…

…and my second as a Swedish Chef with some veggies and bread on the side. Both done on a ‘food & beverage’ themed MSCA zine.

I drew this one on a an “animals” themed issue blank. It’s a full issue of our zine with a blank cardstock cover to draw on.

I started off with drawing with a yellow #2 pencil. I used a glass to draw the circle for the Electric Mayhem drum head logo.

I then used a straight edge to draw the lines for the starburst pattern. Once the pencil drawing was done I started coloring the figure, drumhead logo, and rays with yellow, golden yellow, orange, magenta, and red makers.

I then started filling in the other rays with various green, blue, and purple markers. I almost forgot to keep a blank sheet of paper under the cover to keep the markers from bleeding through to the inside zine cover/pages.

I then colored in the pants, bandana, eyebrows, with different shades of grey markers.

I used a metallic silver Signo Uniball pen on the chain and gold one on the tooth in the band logo.

For the sequins on his shirt I used a gold and a red metallic/sparkle GelWriter pen.

For the black line inking I used an 03 Pigma Micron pen. I tend to use the 03 size nib/pen for most of my inking, but occasionally use an 01 for finer lines, or an 05 for thicker ones.

I’m not a fan of my inking, and it’s probably the part of doing these drawings that gives me the most stress. Always happy once I’ve completed the inking stage and haven’t completely trashed the drawing..!

I used a white Gelly Roll pen for the highlights and to draw more of his mustache, which I then went back over with some yellow and pinks.

I added a few more highlights with the white gel pen, and then used a white Prismacolor pencil to blend out the highlights.

Once it was completed, I took it outside and sprayed a light coat of Krylon Workable Fixative on it. I like to do light overlapping passes. I then let it dry and then scanned it. I’ll have all my sketchcovers and sketchcards for sale at upcoming events like the Memphis Comic Expo in September.

I love drawing the Muppets. Hope you thought this one rocked!
