Muppet Monster Monday – My Cookie Monster Sketchcover

Hey, gang- back for another Muppet Monster Monday with Cookie Monster.

He’s one of my favorite Muppets and I’ve drawn a few sketchcards of Cookie before. (Click HERE to see how I drew those.)

I love drawing the Muppets, especially the Muppet monsters.

Over the weekend I drew Chef Cookie on a Mid-South Cartoonists Association blank skethcover zine, which was the first time for me to draw on one of the MSCA blanks.

This issue of “The Good, The Bad, And The Sketchy” was a “snacky” food/beverage themed issue and was our 12th zine to produce- and my first to edit. It has a regular cover (designed by me) and an additional blank B/W cardstock cover to draw on.

I started off drawing on the blank cover with a #2 pencil. I like sketching with them. If I was going to do the whole illustration in pencil I’d break out my drawing pencils and use leads of different hardness, but for something like this a regular yellow #2 pencil works just fine for me.

I used several shades of blue markers to color Cookie’s fur (Copic and Weisbrandt). Sometimes he looks more light to royal blue, and sometimes he seems to have a bit of an aqua/turquoise tint. I kinda tried to split the difference on this one.

I drew in Cookie’s eyes, hat, apron, and mouth with light and dark shades of grey (Copic and Weisbrant markers), added stripes to his apron, and colored in a cookie in his hand using a few different flesh like colors (Copic, Weisbrant, and Touchnew markers).

I drew more cookies on the back side of the cover and then colored in the background with a yellow Copic marker.

I drew in the chocolate chips in a couple shades of brown, and then inked the drawing with an 03 black Pigma Micron pen

For highlights I used a white Gelly Roll pen and a Prismacolor pencil, as well as letting some of the white of the cover-stock show through.

Once I was finished I sprayed a light coating of Krylon spray fixative over the surface of the sketchcover to seal and help protect it. I recommend doing this in a well ventilated area or outside. I usually go out on the back patio. A beer flat box or piece of cardboard to lay it on/on helps a lot.

Currently I have a “London After Midnight” marker art piece in the MSCA art show at Playhouse On The Square now through July 17, 2025 in the upstairs gallery, and the Artists Reception will be June 27, 2025, from 5 – 7 pm when you can meet and greet the artists up on the 2nd floor. I’ll be a part of the MSCA art shows at Germantown Community Theatre in October/November, and at the Memphis Jewish Community Center in December/January.

I also have some sketchcards for sale right now out at The Cellar in Bartlett, TN including one of my Cookie Monster cards. They’re all hand-drawn and are $35ea. You can buy copies of the MSCA’s zine here, as well as at Comics & Collectibles on Poplar Ave. in east Memphis.

I’ll have more zines, sketchcovers, sketchcards, prints, stickers and more at upcoming shows and events like Zine Fest, Memphis Comic Expo, and Monster Market this fall.

Hope to scare ya there!
