Hey, gang- it’s another Monster Monday and I’ve got another marker painting to share with you for my upcoming “Featured Creatures” art show starting this June at Playhouse on the Square.
Last week I showed you how I painted my “Gillman” acrylic marker piece on a wood panel.
I picked up these round and square wood panels at Dollar Tree for about a $1.25ea. I’ve gotten some of my small sticker crates, sketchcard mini-easels, and chalkboard price signs there for my con table set-up. You kinda have to shop the store because their inventory changes throughout the year and can be different at each location.
I’ve done a few previous marker paintings on wood panels and smaller stretched canvases for MSCA shows and the annual Monster Market.
I picked up the blank canvases at Michaels, and ordered the coffin shaped wood panels from Trekell Art Supplies online.
I based this “Death Is Just Around The Corner” painting off of a pencil sketch I did a while back. I wanted to see what it would look like in color.
I started off transferring the image to the wood panel with tracing paper and a #2 pencil (think carbon paper), and finished out the details in pencil. I then started filling in the building behind the main figure.
Next I started filling in the sky and moon in the background.
After those were filled in I started on the brick wall.
I’m using Posca, Ivsun, and Sharpie Creative paint markers. You can find them all online or at stores like Walmart, Michaels, The Art Center, or other art supply stores.
I bounced back and forth between the main figure and the wall, and used a metallic silver pen on the knife. I wasn’t happy with the blues I used on the buildings so I changed it to a couple shades of purple. The good thing about these paint pens is that once they are dry you can go back over them if you need to cover up any mistakes, or you can blend them while the paint is still wet. They are fun to experiment with.
I used a black Pigma Micron pen for the outlines, and a white Prismacolor pencil for some highlights.
The final touches were some white highlights in the eyes. Once done with the finished piece, I took it outside and sprayed it with a light coat of Krylon Workable Spray Fixative. Best to do light overlapping coats in a well ventilated area.
My “Featured Creatures” art show reception will be on June 5, 2026 from 5-7pm in 2nd Floor West gallery at Playhouse on the Square – 66 South Cooper Street, Memphis, TN 38104. There’s another artist having their reception the same night in the downstairs gallery. Show runs from June 6-August 2, 2026 and in conjunction with Playhouse’s production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street“, June 12 – July 12, 2026. Free to attend art shows during Playhouse’s normal business hours.
