“SomeTHING New To Show You!” – My ‘Fantastic Four’ Sketchcover

Hey, gang- I’ve got someTHING new to show you- my latest sketchcover.

It’s a “Fantastic Four” #1 sketchcover featuring The Thing with a guest appearance of the Human Torch.

I started off with a blank Marvel Comics sketchcover, and an inked drawing I found that I drew a while back and never did anything with…waste not!

I lightboxed the inked drawing on the cover with a yellow #2 pencil. I wanted the Torch’s signal to be a bit bigger so I freehanded it on the back.

I also freehand drew a NYC skyline on the back in pencil as well.

I used a variety of markers on this comic- Copic, Ohuhu, Touch New, and Weisbrandt markers. I started off with a few different shades of orange and golden yellow on the Thing’s rocky hide.

Same for the Torch’s flames, but with more red and light yellow thrown in.

And the ” the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing” needs his trademarked blue eyes, so I colored those while adding the blue sky.

I then used a few shades of grey for the background buildings, and did some stippling with a tissue and a Copic refill to create . Aslo did a bit of that technique with a reddish orange on the Thing’s skin.

I then used a black Pigma Micron pen to do the line art. I had to use an 03 because I couldn’t find any of my thicker 05 pens.

I did the highlights with a white Signo gel pen, Gelly Roll pen, and Prismacolor pencil.

Once finished, I sprayed the entire surface with some Krylon workable fixative in light layers, then and let it dry overnight.

I have it, a Doctor Who, and a Riddler for sale at 901 Comics East on Macon Road.

All three sketchcovers are front/back wraparound covers.

There’s also several various blank sketchcovers for you to draw on yourself, or have an artist draw you something cool.

Just don’t ask me- I don’t do commission work..!

I do have lots of sketchcards for sale at the shop, too.

Some are official artist returns, and some are personal sketchcards drawn on my own custom blanks.

I’ll be at the shop for the next Mid-South Cartoonists Association’s Drink-N-Draw (March 13th, 6-8pm) and Sat-Art-Day (April 20, 10am-2pm), as well as this year’s Free Comic Book Day (May 4th). I’ll be set up in-store along with some of the other MSCA members.
