Franken-Friday: My Latest Airbrushed Monsterpiece

Hey, gang- I’ve got a new airbrushed monsterpiece for you for this Frankenstein Friday.

On Thursday afternoon Mid-South Cartoonists Association members Dale Martin, Kevin L. Williams, and I headed out to the Germantown Community Theatre to hang our latest MSCA group art show- “Drawn Of The Dead”. One of the paintings we hung was my latest Frank painting.

For this painting, I used my trusty ol’ Paasche VL-3 double action airbrush and some Createx airbrush paint. I use a piston driven “pancake” style Craftsman compressor with a reservoir tank.

To start, I used my nearly 40yr old Artograph Super AG100 projector to crop and trace some reference points on the canvas, and then airbrushed the portrait with a medium grey paint mixture.

I then defined the painting by going back and forth with the grey, black, and white paint.

Once finished I did a few light layers of spray fixative on the canvas and allowed it to dry before packing it up to head to GCT. I have to paint outside, and got a late start on it because of the rain at the beginning of the week. Thankfully the weather was great Wed/Thur this week and I was able to knock it out before we hung the show. And when I say “knock it out”, it took me about a day longer than it would’ve just a few years ago. I’m getting slow in my old age..!

The “Drawn Of The Dead” art show runs from October 10-November 10, 2025 and runs in conjunction with GCT’s performance of “Mary Shelley’s: Frankenstein“.

You can see the art show in the theater’s lobby during normal GCT box office hours and performances.

Here are a few of my paintings for the MSCA art show in the GCT lobby. We have about 24 pieces from 10 artists on display.

I’ll also have several of my monsterpieces for sale at the Monster Market downtown this week.

I slid by the The Medicine Factory today and got a quick sneak peek at this year’s monster merch and saw a few of my art pieces in the mix.

This Halloween themed pop-up shop runs October 10-16, 2025 and has several great events lined up for the week, including a showing of “Dracula” by the Beale Street Monster Club this Sunday.

And don’t forget I’ll be set up at the Comic Con In The Park on Staturday, October 11 from 3-7pm at Marquette Park in Memphis.

I should be fairly easy to spot..!
