F.L.A.G. Friday – Free Little Art Gallery

Hey, gang- I wanted to share a fun thing that’s in my neck of the woods…a free little art gallery.

It’s located outside of Mrs. Hippie Eats in Hernando, MS- which is our favorite to-go restaurant in town. It’s on McIngvale and just across from the Walmart. The Marian Norwood Free Little Art Gallery is easy to get to and totally free to enjoy.

So, what exactly is a Free Little Art Gallery..?

A Free Little Art Gallery is like a Little Free Library, but for tiny artworks of all kinds! The art and galleries come in all types, colors, shapes, and locations, but they’re all small…and free. Some are “take one-leave one”, others are “take one and/or leave one”, but all are available to just view art as well. Jewelry, mini paintings, small sculpts, sketches, prints, and more can be found in them. “Make Art. Leave Art. Enjoy Art.”

From A Free Little Art Gallery — “FLAG” for short — is a community project encouraging everyone to create and share art. If you see something in the gallery you like, take it home. Or create something you want to share, and leave it for someone else to take away and love. An important difference between Little Free Libraries and FLAGs is that people who put a book into a Little Free Library, generally didn’t write the book themselves. FLAGs are about encouraging people to create.

To find out more about where to find one– or how start one in your area check out the Free Little Art Galleries website at: https://freelittleartgalleries.art/

A couple weeks ago I saw Heather Bugg Ries at Mrs. Hippie Eats ask:

Hey friends. Our Art box could use some attention. If anybody out there has any extra Art pieces or art supplies they would like to donate to the free little art gallery or if you have an art class at your school that may be looking for some sort of fun project we would love some new fun Art donations. Let’s fill this thing up for Marian Norwood!

I saw the Facebook post so I gathered up a few items to drop off.

I mentioned it to Mid-South Cartoonists Association president Kevin L. Williams at our monthly dinner gathering and he gave me a couple of the MSCA’s “The Good, The Bad, and the Sketchy” zines to take along with a few of my stickers.

This week I had to stop by Walmart so I swung by the Marian Norwood/Hippie FLAG to drop off another MSCA zine, stickers, and a hand-drawn pumpkin sketchcard.

There were a couple stickers left, but both of the other MSCA zines were gone, and some other folks had dropped off a few new pieces of original art, too!

I plan on doing more art to drop off whenever I’m over by it, especially now that I don’t have an art show to work on. We’re looking at doing another MSCA Sat-Art-Day in November, and we’ll have lots of art supplies, blank sketchcards, mini-canvases, and more for anyone who wants to draw anything to donate to the free little art gallery. I can also pick up any items that folks want to donate at our next dinner meeting at Garibaldi’s Pizza in October.

In addition to the FLAG at Mrs. Hippie Eats, I noticed a Little Free Libraries outside of Lost Pizza Co. in Hernando, too. It’s located next door to the DeSoto Arts Council off Courthouse Square and Hwy. 51. I love their Popeye pizza, wings, and their cinnamon bread sticks..! I plan on dropping off some books the next time Nicki and I visit. Also want to check out and see if the Free Little Library at Lee’s Summit Park in Hernando is still around- it was an Eagle Scout project several years ago. I’d love to see the DeSoto Arts Council do a Little Free Library for art books and reference books, as well as art supplies to share.

And speaking of dropping off art, last weekend I dropped off my all my art for the upcoming 10th annual Memphis Monster Market pop-up shop that’s coming up in October at the Medicine Factory.

And, don’t forget that I’ll be set up at the 3rd annual Memphis Monster Con in November at the AgriCenter. It’s gonna be MUCH bigger than previous ones at the fairgrounds.

Hope to see you all at them- cheers!
