Hey, gang- hope you’re all safe and warm from this recent winter storm. It was a doozy for sure!
We dodged the freezing rain bullet and got mostly sleet, but we got so much of it that it became ice. Thankfully we were able to stock up on food and supplies before the storm hit and we didn’t have any power or water outages in our neck of the woods, but the streets stayed slick for about a week. For us it started on early Saturday and pretty much constantly sleeted through the weekend with only a short break in it here and there to tease us. The temps would get high enough above freezing for the top layer to melt- only to refreeze into ice at night when the temps plummeted again down into the teens and single digits.
When our street cleared enough for us to get out of the neighborhood, and got out again late in the week to restock.
We had a lot of “Bubba trucks” help clear the roads, but some got stuck for a bit, and we watched one lady in an SUV slowly back down our hill. The main roads were finally good, but the side streets were still nasty and we had a few problems getting back into our neighborhood after dark. Some stores had cleared their parking lots, but Walmart and Kroger hadn’t- and Kroger had closed early, too. While at Walmart I hadn’t seen the shelves that empty since the pandemic..! We were able to get most of what we needed.
The frozen mess got so compacted and slick around us we probably could of ice skated in our yard. Our raised beds got filled with the sleet/ice mix, and the PVC cage over our new blueberries collapsed due to the weight that had collected on top of the freeze cloth. I think they and our smaller roses will survive, but we won’t know for a few weeks.
So while it was cold outside I drew a “Fallout” sketchcard featuring a Brotherhood of Steel knight from the current TV show on Amazon Prime.
I started off in pencil. I normally use a yellow #2 pencil, but for this one I used a click pencil.
I used a variety of alcohol based markers for the coloring on this card- Copic markers, Ohuhu markers, Touch New markers, Weisbrandt markers and Letraset markers.
I used a Signo silver metallic pen and a black Pigma Micron pen for inking it.
For the white highlights I used a Gelly Roll pen and a Prismacolor pencil.
Once I was done drawing it I sprayed a light coating of Krylon Workable Fixative over the card to help protect it. It’s best to do overlapping light layers, and spray outdoors or in a well ventilated area.
I’ve got several of my sketchcards for sale out at The Cellar on Bartlett Blvd., and will have some with me and Nicki at the upcoming Mid-South Collectible Toy Show later this month on February 28th from 9AM – 230PM. The toy show will be located at 5868 Stage Road, Bartlett, TN (just around the corner from The Cellar). Nicki and I will have a space there selling my original art, prints, stickers, zines, trading cards, and some vintage Star Wars pieces from our collections. Admission is FREE!
Recently I was part of the Midsouth Cartoonists Association‘s “Art Of The Game” art show out at the Memphis Jewish Community Center. I had four pieces in the show including a “Fallout” Ghoul marker piece (click here to see how I drew it).
We had a great turnout for our artists’ reception at the MJCC‘s Shainberg Gallery on January 8th. The space was amazing!
Nicki and I had a fun night out at it- I wore my new Pacman tie original MSCA logo cap and my gamer girl wife wore her Geeky Jersey “Fallout” hockey jersey and collectible Pip-Boy replica.
On Tuesday, February 3rd at the MSCA‘s monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi’s Pizza, I’ll get to pick up whatever art didn’t sell at the art show. We meet in person on the first Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm at Garibaldi’s Pizza near the U of M – 3530 Walker Ave., Memphis, TN 38111 (located across the street from Tiger Book Store). MSCA monthly meet-ups are free and open to the public- just bring a few bucks to order off the menu and be sure to introduce yourself. We always love to have folks bring along what they’ve been working on to show the group, talk toons, draw on jam pieces, work on tablets/laptops/sketchbooks, or doodle on napkins with us!
I’ll have all my art leftovers at the toy show this month and whatever doesn’t sell there at my “Featured Creatures” art show this summer at Playhouse on the Square. I’ll have several new airbrushed monsterpiece portraits on display upstairs in the 2nd Floor West gallery from June 6 – August 2nd.
Hope to scare ya there!
