Let’s fix that!

Tim Brown and I headed up on Thursday afternoon, and as usual Timmy and I stopped at Lambert’s Cafe in Sikeston, MO.

Timmy happy! He had the hog jowls- or as I like to call them, “bacon on steroids”!

We got there just in time for the opening ceremony/skit.

It was funny as always!

Artists Alley/Writers Way was jumpin’ as always. That’s writer Josh Elder with Superman (Josh Boultinghouse).

My Bizarro painting found a good home.

We got to see the unveiling of the new Noel Neill/Lois Lane statue.

Papa Cliff drove Noel to the statue plaza in his Studebaker.

The statue was created in Utah by the same folks who created the Superman statue and now stands just up the street from it.

I got to meet the statue artist/sculptor Gary Ernest Smith.

Down at the chamber of commerce on Saturday Traci and Nicki inducted guest Sam Witwer into the Memphis Star Ward Fan Force.

Sam stars in the Star Wars: Force Unleashed game and comic, as well as in SMALLVILLE on TV, along with co-star Laura Vandervoort.

Laura, who is a martial artist, too- said she’d love to play Kimiyo in a Bushi Tales movie! (Did you hear that, Hollywood..?!)

Both Sam and Laura couldn’t have been nicer, but they both gushed when Trevor Hawkins presented them each with one of his paintings of them.

Friday and Saturday nights in AA/WW we had a showing of Superman II (with producer Ilya Salkind) and Fan Films sponsored by Inked Monkey.

As usual it was hot again in Metropolis- so hot some might have sold their soul for a Big Gulp!

But the heat and humidity didn’t stop the costumers from coming out in force.

The judges had a tough job again this year- tons of great costumes were entered!

The winners! Best Clark/Superman, Best Lois, crowd favorite (Doomsday), best hero (Steel), and best villain (Lobo).

Best group- The Avengers

The Avengers’ secret weapon- Tiny Thor!

And proof that cloning does exist!

Nicki and I had a great time and look forward to being back again next year.

Lex Luthor For Sale

If you’d like one of my paintings now’s your chance!

I originally did this to show at the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL a couple years ago, and ended up donating it to the HERO Initiative art auction at the Phoenix Cactuscon. Noel Neill (the ORIGINAL Lois Lane) was kind enough to sign it for me before the auction (she starred with Kevin Spacey in Superman Returns).

Well, it’s back up for auction- this time on ebay by Brandon Ladd Burkey, owner of Crossroads Entertainment Co., LLC. and the guy who bought it in Phoenix. Minimum bid is $200 and apparently you get one of my sketchbooks, too.

Best I remember this one is approx. 2′x3′ and it’s airbrush acrylic on canvas.

Green Arrow by Truett in Metropolis

I sometimes am worried about the future of comics, and getting more kids interested into comics. If it’s in the hands of folks like 5 year old Truett then I’ve got nothing to worry about.

Metropolis 2007

I’ve been seeing a lot of parents bringing their kids to comic shows/conventions lately, and have noticed a lot of them not only dressing the kids up as superheroes and other comics characters, but dressing up themselves. Very cool to see a whole family of supers!

Golden Age Flash

But in Metropolis this year I met a golden aged costumer who was only 5 years old. That was Truett. I had just gotten back from the baseball game and noticed a 3ft tall Flash. I asked to take his picture and his dad told him, “Do the pose.”- and he did! Too funny. When his dad realized I had done a Flash painting for the art show he asked if he could buy it. “Sure!” I said, and we went over to the painting. I noticed Truett had a small sketchbook and tiny Sharpie attached. I asked if I could sketch in his book and drew a quick Flash in it for him.

The next day during my panel on self publishing Truett and his mom were there and sitting down front. He sat there quietly drawing in his sketchbook and would occasionally look up and listen, and then go back to sketching. He even asked a couple questions when we got to the Q&A part. I asked how many people wanted to create comics and he was one of the folks that raised their hands. After the panel was over Truett came up and gave me a sketch! It was the only sketch I got all weekend.

Like I said, if kids like Truett grow up to make comics then we’ve got some great things to look forward to.

Well, another Superman Celebration in Metropolis is over. Had a “super” time- saw a lot of friends, met some new ones, sold some comics and art, ate some corn dogs and Lambert’s, got some books signed, played baseball, danced, watched fan-films, became an official citizen of Metropolis, and took a ton of pictures.

I’ll write a review of the weekend later this week, and post some pics.

For now, need rest…

Well, I finished another painting to take to Metropolis with me. I’m going to try and finish one more, but here’s what I have ready so far.

And one from last year I’ll be bringing back.

And if I can fit it in the car with the rest of my stuffs I may bring this one back to show again.

I’ll be with the rest of the MSCA/Memphis Mafia in Artists Alley/Writers Way. We’ll be set up about a block up from the chamber of commerce, and about 2 blocks up from the Superman statue on the west side of Market Street in the Four Rivers Church building- same side of the street and the Supermuseum and chamber of commerce and next to Thor’s Gym. The Metropolis Planet is about a block from east from the statue, and the Ohio River and Harrah’s casino are about two-three blocks south from there.

This year John Ostrander, Gail Simone, Mike Norton, and Josh Elder, and Beverly Washburn will be joining us there.

Not my backyard- view from the cabin.

I spent this Memorial Day weekend trying to recover from a nasty case of poison ivy. Thank God for Aveeno and hot water!

It all started about 2 weeks ago when I tried to clear out some honeysuckle and other brush out of my backyard and fences. Didn’t see the poison ivy growing right along with it. I hauled several loads of cut vines and downed limbs from the latest storms up to the street and thought I’d been careful- gloves, long pants, washed up good after, etc.

Well, a day later while going to the movie theater to see Star Trek I noticed a few bumps on my right hand and wrist. I kept from scratching and went to Wally World later to pick up some Caladryl. By this time it was reeeeealllllly starting to itch, and the next morning it was on my other arm and starting down my chest! I got ahold of some of the cheap pink stuff and that seemed to help.

A week later it’s gotten a bit worse and I’ve got planes to go out of town to Arkansas for the weekend with my girlfriend Nicki and some of our friends.

The Wal-Mart

We stop by The Walmart in Conway (home of American Idol winner Kris Allen) to pick up some groceries for the cabin and Nicki helps me find some Aveeno bath stuffs. Well, that did the trick! After getting the water faucet backwards I finally got some hot water for a bath and soaked for about an hour. Did it again the next night. Whew, what a relief! My skin is finally going back to normal and my “leprosy” is almost gone.

Even though we spent most of the weekend riding to-from Arkansas in Nicki’s truck, we had a fun weekend.

It was good to finally be home, though!

Some of the MSCA/Memphis Mafia will be making a road trip up I-55 to attend the 4th Annual Cape Comic Con on April 25-26 in Cape Girardeau, MO. It’s a small show, but a lot of fun- and is only about 2 1/2 hours from Memphis, and not too far from Lambert’s Cafe- in fact, it’s on the way there and back! Mmm…throwed rolls..!

DC Comics’ Gail Simone, Mike Norton, and Josh Elder will all be attending the Metropolis Superman Celebration this June 11-14.

The media guests include Justin Hartley and Phill morris from SMALLVILLE, Beverly Washburn from Superman and the Mole Men, and the first lady of Metropolis Noel Neill.

Members of the MidSouth Cartoonists Association (AKA Memphis Mafia) – Kevin Williams, Muley The Mule, Adam Shaw, Penny Register-Shaw, Antone Wade, Janet Wade, Anakin Wade (his first appearance!), Andrew Chandler, Lin Workman (me!)- along with Jay Chuppe will be back in artists alley again this year.
